Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)
Regulate, Connect, Thrive
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a research-informed listening intervention developed by Dr. Stephen Porges and informed by Polyvagal Theory. Using specially filtered music, SSP is designed to support nervous system regulation, sensory processing, and a greater capacity for connection and engagement.
Research on SSP is still developing, with promising findings in areas related to auditory sensitivity, emotional regulation, anxiety, trauma-related symptoms, and social engagement. SSP is used as an adjunctive intervention and is individualized to each person’s needs and responses.
Before beginning, we will complete a readiness assessment and discuss your goals, sensitivities, current functioning, and available supports. From there, I develop an individualized listening plan. Some people are able to complete much of the program on their own, while others benefit from additional support, slower pacing, or provider-supported listening sessions.
